Firefly (2002-2003)

This show takes a whole new spin on the term 'space cowboy'. It's set 500 years in the future when humanity has managed to terraform planets and moons to sustain earthly life all over the galaxy. All the new planets are aligned under a tyrannical governance called the Alliance but that does not mean that it's a perfect system. Lawlessness abounds on the edges of the galaxy as each new planet is essentially a new frontier, and I mean like a cowboy frontier not a star trek frontier! There are bar fights, shoot outs, and shady characters in every episode that follows a crew of renegades aboard the space ship 'Serenity' as they strive to make a living picking up passengers and doing freelance delivery from planet to planet, all the while avoiding Alliance suspicion.

Captain Mel, played by Nathan Fillion, is a hard ass with a moral code even he can't stand up to, but no matter what kind of trouble it gets his crew into, he'll always stand up for the good side. On board are a mechanic, doctor, preacher, prostitute, mental patient, and others, and while it sounds like the set up for a joke that's gonna take too long to tell, Joss Whedon actually did an amazing job with this series. There's a great balance of action and humor and the chemistry of the characters really draws one into the show. The whole series is only one season long culminating in a movie called 'Serenity' (also on the Queue) and I find myself watching it over and over. You definitely don't have to have any interest in science fiction to like this series, so if you're looking for an entertaining new show to start, give this one a go!
